One Man's Garbage

Is another woman's treasure.

It embarrasses Ryan that I make eyes at the neighbor's garbage, so I have to do my curbside snatching solo, well, technically not solo as I usually have a slew of miniature sidekicks in the getaway vehicle, but they think it's awfully fun to pull over, load the car with free garbage, and squeal away with adrenaline rushing.  A thrill, I tell you, a thrill.  (Go ahead and mutter, "Sheesh, this woman needs a life.") The above garbage was confiscated many months ago.  So many, in fact, that I spent nearly an hour looking for the "before" picture.  I enjoyed it, though, reliving all the photos that never reached a blog post.  So many photos.

Only one of the above chairs made it far enough to reach a makeover, the other was not sturdy enough and went back to the curb for another sucker to grab.  I removed the upholstery job on top and recovered the seat with an old vinyl tablecloth I had on the kids' table, saved for a drop cloth.  Next came sanding, a coat of primer leftover from the kitchen, and a top coat of white spray paint from another project.  Now Henrietta has a place to sit, unless you want to come over and take a spin?

  1. Ha ha, you remind me of my mother-in-law! She lives off of garage sales, but free curbside garbage...even better! I don't have the gene that allows me to find fun with that particular hobby, but I admire your fix-it abilities. Darling chair and chicken! My parents always get a kick out of watching their curbside garbage disappear. People regularly cruise their neighborhood the day before garbage pickup.

  4. A woman after my genes! I got an ornate Chinese chair amongst our apartment complex trash in Seoul. It was so nice that our Mission President is taking it back to America with him.

  6. One of my favorite activities! I currently have a standing request in to my mom for particular pieces that continue to elude me--her neighborhood is 2 hrs away, and they throw out different stuff... Doesn't it make you feel thrift-crafty?

  7. Very cute! I love getting stuff from off the side of the road! My husband had seen a desk on the side of the highway with a sign, "free." It was way up on a trailer. By the time he pulled off the road, and was hesitating, I was on top of the trailer and handing him the desk. He was astonished, but it was a blast! :)

  8. we used to put things that were too big for the garbage men to take on the curb and hope that other people would take them so that we didn't get a nasty note. thank goodness for people like you!
