Sew All 26: Z

Did you think I dropped off the face of the earth? ;) I had the incredible opportunity to teach my women's Coastal Curtsy Skirt tutorial at SNAP! conference and I look forward to sharing my experience, but I've been informed that my blog has been disappointingly stagnant of late. I'm here to remedy that and share my final Sew All 26 post which has already been enjoyed several times by the sweet recipient.
My sweet Pearl.  My large-hearted, red-headed girl of 11 years.  I sat down after my Y project (which might be one of my all time favorites) and jotted down how many times I made something for each one of my kids.  Pearl came up short and she was thrilled when I told her she was next.

The thing about Pearl is she wants something that is non fussy.  She doesn't want bows and ruffles and multiple pieces.  She can't worry about wrinkles when we ride our bikes.  And, she's gotta have a quick exit for post-church change.
I drafted the dress from one of her t-shirts and the neck was eyeballed and turned out too low for comfort (whoops!), so I added a little inset.
But, it's easy on, easy off, no ironing needed.  All right up Pearl's alley.
Pearl has been told from day one that her hair color is covetable, that women pay hundreds to try to get that color.
She decided that she wanted to grow her hair long enough so she could still pull it back into a ponytail, but also long enough to be able to donate to Locks of Love.  She researched what we needed to do, and how we needed to do it and had me cut close to a foot of her lovely locks.
Then she said she just wanted to keep growing her hair out and cutting it and donating it over and over again to help other children. Heart of gold, this one.
So, this concludes the first Sew All 26!  If you have a Z inspired project, leave a link in the comments (since my inlinkz subscription has expired, oops!)  I will do a recap and round-up of your projects to wrap it up.  I've been so impressed by so many of your alphabet projects as you've followed along.

  1. What a sweet girl she is to think of giving away her lovely hair!

  2. How lovely of you to share your hair, Pearl. A beauty inside and out....that's you!

  3. I have a very similar hair color to Pearl and I, too, grew out and cut my hair for Locks of Love over and over (I had cancer as a teenager and know how important wigs are). Until last September when they told me it was the last time--I was at almost 10% gray and the gray doesn't hold up as well. ::tear:: on getting old. The dress is just lovely and so is sweet Pearl.

  4. Love Pearl's new custom dress. It is very sweet. My cousin has hair color just like Pearl's. When she was young, she named her hair color, strawberry delight. She is now 31 and we are VERY envious of her hair!

  7. She's beautiful inside and out! And so must be her dress, given that you made it...
Fun, I also created zigzags for Z, but with a very different end result: http://vera-luna.blogspot.nl/2014/04/zigzag.html
    Loved this series!

  8. Your pearl is so very beautiful! I have a fondness for redheads, such strikingly gorgeous girls. My eldest has a tint of red but it is sadly fading as she grows up. I love your choice of yellow. Pretty dress.

  13. What a beautiful thing Pearl did. I would suggest, however, looking into one of the other hair donation organizations because Locks of Love actually sells (some of) their products rather than giving them to kids in need for free. Pantene Beautiful Lengths is one and Wigs for Kids is another!
I totally would have done just about anything for her hair color (and still would!), so you're right about that!

  14. I love that fabric. The lacy background makes me think of your bees and honeycomb. Buzzzz - more Z's. My Z is fairly lame with the Z's being in the middle - an Izzy top. I did want to complete the challenge though so that was it. http://www.workpraysew.com/2014/04/prp-signature-style-with-z-thrown-in.html

  16. How funny - I found your blog through a link from lil blue boo, and noticed you had a daughter named Pearl as I do. What a surprise to find she has donated her hair - just as my own big-hearted Pearl did three years ago. A link in case you are interested in another big hair chop! (Don't panic about the blog title - it's an anagram of our names!)
