Sisters Five

We don't have any cool "built-ins" in our house, the kind that someone would tout on a home description "tons of custom built-ins!" The appeal of a built-in bookshelf or corner breakfast nook is alluring because it looks natural, seamlessly part of the house, never to be removed or rearranged: unique and always there. That's what we like to remind our girls about having so many sisters, they're like built-in friends! Sometimes we'll get the exasperated sigh and sometimes they'll agree with us.
When I heard that the new Tinker Bell movie, Secret of the Wings, was about sisters, I was excited to preview it with my girls. We started the evening by getting everyone in and out of the bath, followed by hair trims all around, and ear cleaning for everyone who would hold still. Then I went to bed because I was already tired. No, not really. Then I had them line up at my bedroom door with their jammies on, blankies, pillows and soft critters in hand and called them in one by one to ask, What do you love about having so many sisters?

Clover: because they're nice and tell me I'm beautiful.
Azure: they're nice to me and play with me.
Olive: that they comfort me and play with me and watch over me.
Pearl: I have someone to play with, to sleep with in my room, and I like to sew stuffed animals with them.
Divine: I love that I always have someone to play with, even if they're super annoying. It's cool because I'm the one with lots of siblings and my friends are super jealous and when they're close in age, it doubles the clothes I can wear.
I think they pretty much hit all the high points of having a sister.
I knew they would love the movie, anything with pretty, sparkly, little fairies, but I wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy it! I found myself chuckling and looking over at Ryan to catch his eye throughout the whole thing from the clever conversation. There wasn't the typical Good vs Evil plot with too-scary-for-Clover characters, just a plot filled with a dilemma that is solved through cooperation and work. It was genuinely a delightful movie that I found myself sad as it came to an end, I was enjoying it so much! It's one of the few movies I'd like to watch again with them.
Pearl turned to me after it was over and asked if we could get another Tinker Bell movie. I told her the next one after this wouldn't be out until 2014, and we both wished it was next week instead.
And did you wonder what poor little Drummer did while we watched Secret of the Wings? He was very busy pulling everything out of his drawer of stripes.

I've also got a giveaway for you! For a chance to win a copy of  Flitterific Fairies Blue-ray™ Double Pack” (which is a Blu-Ray/DVD combo), tell me what sisterhood means to you?

  1. Speaking of sisters... are you totally excited or kinda freaked about the change in missionary ages?! I have three daughters of my own and am really happy for the opportunities they will have.

  2. My sister is my best friend and I'm so very grateful to have her! I was thrilled to find out each time I was having a girl to know that they would have sisters and instant friends too. I have 3 daughters and love seeing their relationships grow!

    Thanks for the chance!

  3. Indont think sisterhood is a birth right. The amazing women I call my sisters are not from mynMother. But they stand behind me and love me unconditionally! As I do them.

  4. Having a sister is having the friend that never goes away. They are with you through all parts of life.
    Thank you or the opportunity.

  5. Oh I wish I had a sister. I love that I have friends as good as a sister could be who love me just as much!

  6. Sisterhood, whether by birth, adoption, friendship, or fellowship, is having a bond between women. Knowing that there is someone there to pick you up, someone to listen, someone to listen to, someone to share a lifelong love and understanding with.

  7. I love having a sister to share experiences with. Going through something is twice as fun when you have someone with you!

  8. I have 4 sisters. Each amazing, having different strengths and talents. What is most fun is to see us all share our different talents and strengths with each other.
Can't wait to see this show with my girls, it sounds great. Thanks for sharing a good review.

  9. To me having a sister is having a life long friend that I can always talk to about anything.

  10. Sisterhood to me is a bond like no other. We are genetically so much the same and yet each very different. We know each other like no one will ever know us. We share voice tone, facial expressions, hand movements, and funny things only we understand. The very best of friendships!

  11. I am one of three sisters, and I have two daughters (We're expecting our 3rd in March and wouldn't it be fun to have another girl!), so I know sisterhood from experience as the sister and as the mother of sisters. It's a wonderful gift to have women who understand your childhood memories and share the same perspective. I love seeing the sweet, loving moments between my girls, and sisterhood is loving, despite the disagreements.

  12. My youngest girl sucks the same 2 fingers (on the same hand)! Buck teeth be damned, I love it!

As one of 3 sisters and the mom of 2 girls, I'm all about the bond. Indescribable.

  13. I'm re-reading a classic book, All-Of-a-Kind Family, with my kids right now and I thought Of your family. The characters in the book are a jewish family living in New York in 1912. While reading it together, the kids are learning all about what a typical Jewish family in that time was like (we are Mormon, so this is new to them!) But the best part is, they have five little girls with a little brother at the end. The stories of sisterhood in this series of books are endless! For example, they all want to get scarlet fever together so that they can all share the "sick room" together.

  14. I have three sisters. I love them more than anything. The one I am closest to has is mentally handicapped and she is so sweet and pure.

  15. My boy would love to win, thank you for the chance.

For me sisterhood is great because we get to talk about what we don't feel good about.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree that sisters are great friends, mine are, but they can be many more things. Mine were definitely confidantes and gave great advise. As well as a great source of clothing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sisters - oh sisters! I have 4 daughters and 3 sisters and have to say life would be BLEAK without them all. Oh yea, and the clothes thing, so very true, I about dies when I moved away from sisters and suddenly had nothing to wear or borrow.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sisterhood has meant that I used to be the one with lots of questions. Now it is me that has some answers and I am sought out for answers. I love watching my 3 girls develope their relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sisters meant that I got lots practice braiding hair, teaching cartwheels, and giving unsolicited advice. (I'm the oldest of three girls)

  20. I always have someone to call and talk with. It makes me look forward to laundry day. hicken at gmail dot com. I am SO glad my daughters have each other.

  21. My sister is someone who drives me absolutely crazy but is the one I can tell my secrets to and be silly with. she is the one friend who I can be completely, 100% me with since she knows my whole history and has had to put up with our parents too. I hope my girls are/stay as close to each other as I am to my sister.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Having a sister means that no matter what you have someone to experience this life with. My sister and I have not always been "friends".. I was the much younger annoying little sister and we only became friends in adulthood. I am grateful for my sister because when I am going through something, she is there without judgement to help me through.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The best thing about having a sister is that she knows pretty much everything about you and loves you all the same!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't have a sister, but I have two little girls. I'm happy that they will have a bond that no other person will have with them their whole lives. They will also be there to support each other through good and bad and even after I'm gone they will never be alone.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I didn't grow up with a sister, but I married a man with one and she has become my own. I love that no matter what happens, she is the friend that will always be there. We can agree, disagree, be happy, get mad, and no matter what, she still shows up to hang out with me and play with my little ones! A sister is the best kind of friend!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't have a sister, but I do have two little girls. I love that they will have each other to lean on and to have someone who will love them unconditionally, besides me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't have a sister, and never missed not having one until I was an adult. Now I would just LOVE to have one. Being a mother of three girls, that is one of my favorite parts - knowing they will always have each other in so many ways. I know that it will affect my relationships with them (they will go to each other for things that I may have gone to my mother for, since I didn't have a sister), but I am so thankful that they will grow up and have each other as they go through life. It really does feel like the best part of my legacy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Having a sister to me is always having the person you can run to with your troubles, the one who wont judge you, the one who always tells you the truth even when it hurts. The girl that knows you to no end and you can trust. My sister is by best friend and even when we are apart in distance I never feel we are apart in heart! She is irreplaceable.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Even though I didn't appreciate having a sister when I was growing up now I can't imagine not talking and laughing and sharing with her. It was a relationship that I needed to grow into.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think sisters of any kind are treasures. They are women who you can relate with and sometimes you need a person who just plain GETS you, to get thru the day.

  33. I have one sister and I look up to her and love her very much we had three brothers growing up and it meant so much to me when she would include me in her life. We are four years apart. We still live close to each other and we each have 3 daughters of our own. I am so grateful for a loving older sister she is always there for me and I cannot imagine life without her. To be a sister is something special and magical!

I love my sisters! And Tinkerbelle, as well. :)

  35. I was and only child of a single mom, in my 20s and married before my mom remarried and adopted a 2 yo girl and 4yo boy. I lived several states away, seeing them perhaps once a year, so I spent most of their growing up years thinking of them more as niece/nephew rather than siblings.

However, when I was expecting my 5 child, my sister was finally 19, and drove out to see me and my family on her first "adult" road trip. We walked carefully around each other for a couple of days before the breakthrough happened - we bonded as SISTERS. How strange to get a sister, at 39 years old!

Having a sister is now so full filling - someone to share the fear/concern of our mother's cancer, someone to commiserate over pregnancy with (she just had her first, I'm having my 6th), someone who loves my kids and I hers nearly as much as our own. I wish I could have grown up with her, but am glad I have her now.

  36. Sisterhood to me means everything! Always having a partner is invaluable. I love my sister.

  37. Sadly, I have two sisters and we all used to be fairly close. We have grown apart in the last 15 years because we don't have the same interests/values. What I do love about our sisterhood is that we are still there for each other and we still can get together and enjoy our times with each other. Arghh, maybe it is me... thanks, mnrridgeway (at)gmail.com

  38. sisterhood means a great start at learning how to handle relationships: conflict, sharing, honesty, handling others feelings, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh, how I WISH I had a sister!
I considered stopping at one child, but the main reason I had two was that I wanted my first daughter to have a sibling. I hope my two girls will be 'built in friends' and I am going to do my best to make that a reality.
Those lucky, lucky little Dill girls!

  40. Ah!! I LOVE the Tink movies :) I also love my sisters, you're right about the built in friends. I have 6 sisters and I love how each of us is so different, but also similar. I love spending time with them, late night chats and daytime texts. I love feeling so connected to them, even though we live far away. You have to be sisters to love so unconditionally. Now I just want to go love on my sisters!! That's it, I'm calling each one, right now :)

  41. Sisterhood...the good, the bad and the ugly yet loving each other through it all. Love your little ones!

    ReplyDelete
  42. My twin & I did not get along when we were kids, but now that we're older we love each other. I am grateful that we are friends now, though It certainly beats living with an enemy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. My sister and I have talked that the thing we love most about having a sister is that she is the one person who knows me and understands the parts of me that most people don't. Other people have entered my life at later points, but she knows my experiences from when I was a little girl. Not all of them define me, but they do impact me and she gets that.
Most importantly, I can be totally real with her and just put it all out there. All the time. I like that and I like that my three girls will have that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Both of my sisters died as infants from SIDS. I have four brothers to make up for it though. But the wonderful thing about life is I have been able to find sisters everywhere. From the ones that marry into my family, to the ones I gained when I got married, to my best friend from college.
And now that I have two girls I'm so excited for them to be able to share the special relationship that develops between to women who love and serve each other.

  46. My daughter would love this! I never had any sisters by birth but there have always been people in my life that were sisters in my heart. A sister is the friend you can call and ask to help with things you'd never even imagine asking anyone else.

  47. Sisterhood is my best friend. We are 7 years apart and we talk everyday of the week. Sometimes for hours and sometimes just to check in. She is my sanity. She is my life saver.

  48. Sisterhood is seeing each other or talking on the phone after a few days or weeks and starting mid-coversation. No explanation necessary.

  50. I come from a family of five girls, and now have four of my own. I was so happy as each of my girls kept coming because there is no connection in this world like a sister. I watch them and am grateful (even on those crazy days where it feels like one more girl in this house would make it split wide open with estrogen) that they have each other, forever and ever.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love my sister. She's weird and drive me crazy for about 20 years but now that we're older and different sizes and she's outgrown her obsession with glitter painting my things... I appreciate her a lot more and am thankful for her

  52. As one who never had a sister (just three brothers), I have loved watching my three girls form their own sisterly bonds. I never expected to have so many girls of my own, but I can't imagine loving anything more. We're about to add a boy to the mix any day now, and I have to admit, I'm a little terrified of the change it'll make to their world, but I can't wait to watch them all grow together.

Thanks for the chance to win, my girls LOVE the Tinkerbell movies. And let's be honest, so have I. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I would love to be picked, my daughter has all of the Tinkerbell movies so far so we'd love to add this to our collection.

I only have one sister 13 years older than me, but we are extremely close! I talk to her on the phone for hours even though we only live 5 houses apart. What I like about sisters, is in our case we are so alike and we tend to be so different from most people we know, she is the only one who really gets me sometimes.

I have three girls though and I love watching their sisterhood blossom.

    Thanks for this fun giveaway!

  55. Love the picture in your bedroom and the pictures of your family. Good to know about the movie too. :) Tinkerbell is not my favorite in Peter Pan. Anyway, one of my sisters came to visit this weekend and it was so much fun(!) even though I got sick/maybe food poisoning again. Loved watching her play with my daughter and making gyoza together.

  56. I don't have a sister, but the great part about that is that I've gathered many sisters-from-other-misters in my life.

My daughter and I saw this movie at the El Captain theater in Hollywood during its brief run at the end of the summer. It was delightful. I'm hard at work making a Periwinkle costume for Halloween, but who knows how I'll do the hair!

  57. Sisterhood to me means joy. Having no sisters of my own, it makes me so happy to see my two daughters develop their sisterhood.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Being a sister to me meant having a built in babysitter - first for me as a child and then for my kids now. It means having someone to help when there isn't anyone else. It means having memories from when you finally got to be old enough to be "cool" to her.

  62. Having a sister is better than any best friend. Lots of laughs and remeber whens. Not feeling like she will judge you because you know all of her secrets. Best of all even after a full out fight you know you can just act like nothing happened tomorrow because you are sisters and nothing can tear that apart.

  63. I have five sisters and the are my dearest friends. Growing up, my mom always told us, "sisters make the best friends." Once we all outgrew the hair-pulling, ha, we have found that to be so true. I love my sisters! I have two little girls and I love watching them be best friends. I know they would love love love this movie so I am entering with fingers crossed on their behalf! Thanks for the giveaway!

  64. O, how I love this post! Your girls are so sweet, and sisters are definitely built in friends!! So, are brothers for that matter (I have 3). My sister is so very special and dear to me though because unlike my brothers she's a girl and understands things boys have a harder time with.

I think it's interesting how as the girls got older the response to your question became longer and more in-depth. It's also interesting only Divine noted that sisters can be annoying!! Hee hee, sisters (sibling in general) are good for that, I think it helps us develop patience. Being the youngest of 5 I can only imagine how annoying I once was, even though I have vague ideas :)

The movie looks super sweet! Has your family watched the other Tinkerbell movies? Those are also nice stories without scary good verses evil plots.

  68. I don't have a sister.
I have twin girls who are 2
and a third girl who is 6 months

I am already loving watching their sisterhood grow. They love and care and snuggle and hit and grab and yell at each other. But they hold hands when someone is nervous, they cry when one is gone from her crib already upon waking and they think it's a punishment to be apart. I know these sisters will have so much fun growing up together, and I will have so much fun seeing what it's like to grow up with sisters.

  69. Sisterhood means, friendship, phone calls, advice, a bit of hair pulling ;) and door slamming, but pats on the back and support in the end :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sisterhood is a forum for letting you sound out your ideas and they may put the brakes on the nost utlandish ones by asking you a few questions. Sisters tend to lend a nurturing hand even if you don't ask. Siblings know which buttons to push and hopefully don't push them very often.

  77. Sisterhood is that special bond which goes beyond family ties and expectations and across the generations. My little sister (born after I was married) and my husband's sister and I share that special bond. I would do anything for them and know they would do the same for me. Almost like a marriage vow ... but death could never part us.

  80. I have 3 girls and 1 boy there was a tv show called Sisters and I loved it and I'm afraid to say that it was probably 20 years ago. in one of the episodes it said friends will come and go but your sisters will always be there. I have 3 sisters and it's true they are always there for me. This has been the motto in our house since the day my 2nd girl was born. It did change when our last child and only boy was born it changed to family instead of sisters. They are all really close now, it may have helped that we made them share a room too. the girls that is.

Believe it or not, I have 10 of them ranging from 20-1 year old (yes there is 1 boy in the middle there). It has meant that I let my youngest have some of the greatest fun with her oldest sister, even when I want her to want Mommy most. I want to make sure they grow up knowing each other regardless of the age range. Sisterhood means loyalty and love, and support. It also means your sister can tell you when you are messing up, and you listen because you know she will always love you, no matter what.

  99. I am blessed to have blood sisters and sisterhood through friendships. They are relationships that I cherish and adore. They are my cheerleaders and my confidants. They are my truth when I don't want to hear it. They give unconditional love no matter the issue. Aww, this is making me miss them and to get in contact w/ them! Thanks!

  103. I don't have a sister, but I do have 2 girls. They can't be away from each other for long & while I love my little brother dearly, I wish I could have that sister/sister bond my girls do. To me, being a sister is all about loving your sibling.

  104. Through recent hardships, my sister and I are closer than ever. I am grateful for the bond we share in life. Sisterhood is having a friend who accepts you as you are and loves you all the same.

  108. I grew up with two brothers, so was thrilled when I married and inherited 2 sisters-in-laws. Later, my brother married a wonderful woman who has become a dear friend and sister. There is something profoundly deep about the bonds women can share. I am so glad that my daughters can grow up experiencing that depth and joy.

  109. i have three brothers and one sisters and for my whole life i have thanked my lucky stars that i got her. to me she is love and comfort and peace. she means the world to me & i'm not exactly sure who i would be without her.

i have three daughters (& 1 baby son!) & i love seeing the love they have for each other. one of my number one goals as a mother is to foster & encourage that love so that it lasts. i want them to have in each other what i have in my sister.

thanks for giving me the chance to think about & remember this again.

  111. I technically haven't a real sister. I have a cousin. She and I were born 10 days apart...our children (my twins and her son) were born, I kid you not, 1 year and 10 days apart. We are the beginning and end of the others soul. We may be apart a mile or a day but when we're back together no second has even passed. She is my most cherished best friend. That is a sister to me.

  112. Sisters are the best. Mine is a built-in best friend. It's hard to live apart now that we're older, so I always look forward to our visits. And now I am super excited for my two girls to have their own built-in best friends.

  113. Just like Pearl, the best part of sisterhood when I was a kid was to have someone to sleep with in my room...my big sis and I had the best adventures sharing a room growing up. We still share adventures now, just over the phone!

  118. I so wanted a sister growing up, but had 3 great brothers instead... and I wish even more as an adult that I could have been blessed with a sister. I am so grateful for my own two little girls so they can have a lifelong friend.
