Sewing Project 4

When Ryan and I were first married, I made him a wool coat for Christmas. He still has it and still wears it (you know, when there's actually cold weather where we're living). Since then, other than a tie here or there, my sewing usually benefits the girls or myself. That's when I thought of sewing this. A little something for my bread winner. See, Ryan often takes his lunch to work. He carries it in a bag (sometimes, something like an Ann Taylor bag--he's confident like that.) He deserves better, I thought.

I've had these 2 rice bags that I've wanted to use somehow for a while. Divine mentioned last week that she needed a new lunch bag. I made Ryan's with a big enough bottom to accommodate the glass containers he takes, and the handles out of the leftovers from Divine's rice bag. To make Divine's more feminine, I finished the edge with red bias and some handles out of pillow ticking tape. (If anyone decides to sew on plastic such as these bags, increase your tension on the sewing machine to 10 so the bobbin thread doesn't do funny things.) If Divine can't bring herself to bringing such a unique lunch bag, I'll hang it on my desk and use it to hold my sewing clippings. Meanwhile, if I ever forget how to make rice, I just have to peek inside Ryan's lunch bag. That's peace of mind, isn't it?

*******
Post edit: I just picked the girls up from school and Divine was thrilled with her new lunch bag. She giggled as she inspected it. I asked her if it was too strange. She gave me the right answer. That's my girl.

  5. I LOVE this idea!! BUT, where do you get rice in these cool bags?? I would totally LOVE to make Nate a lunch bag like this as I make him a lunch every day and usually send it in a Target bag or something dumb like that. His birthday is coming up in 2 weeks or so and this is the PERFECT present! Now, to find a bag of rice. (We are actually in need of rice as well...so he won't wonder what I am doing when I buy a big bag.) :)

  10. Ryan loved his bag! He also got a big smile on his face when he saw it.

You can go to any Asian Grocery store to find these. Our favorite rice, by the way, is the Tamanishiki rice. Because Ryan is a rice snob, and has turned me into one as well.

  11. Okay, Katy. You got me motivated and inspired. Here's my project: http://bargainbasics.blogspot.com/2009/09/one-of-kind-dress-for-under-10.html. Don't have high expectations. It's the first time I've ever sewn anything for myself, and the first time I've ever done pleats. But it was fun.
