Sewing Project 14!

It has been a fun, but exhausting month of sewing. I've been so productive, knowing I've had an audience. Is that what it takes? I happened upon this [free!] purse pattern and had to make it.....for [one of] you, of course! Just leave a comment relating to sewing: something you've made, or tried making, something you've enjoyed about sewing month, something you've learned, or even something you vow you're going to attempt sometime in the future. I'll choose the recipient Thursday sometime. I'm not telling the exact minute, because I'm exciting like that.

  2. Oh Katy, you've inspired me to break out my sewing machine all month long and here it is the last day of September and I'm finally going to do it. I've got a skirt (my favorite) to hem as well as a pair of black pants. Then....I'm going to attempt to make an apron with the pattern I cut out MONTHS ago. We'll see how it goes. You are awesome in your sewing endeavors, by the way.

  3. Katy.... you inspire me so much too!!! I enjoy making dresses and outfits for my 2 girls as you do for your 5!!! i just started sewing this year and have really come to love it. I was inspired by one of your other blogs a few months back about the pillowcase dress you made....and i took it upon myself to make one..well two... myself. They really turned out cuter than I thought and it's a very easy pattern to follow(if you don't have a true pillowcase to use for it)--in my case I didn't...so I sewed the whole thing. This was a great month dedicated to sewing....I was so glad I read your blog each day with something new on it :):)

  4. You have inspired me also. I completed 5 small scripture bags, 176 Small Fry items for The Festival of Trees. 3 blankets for the NCIU for my ward's project and I've finally made my tote for the seat I need on trips, etc.

Love all your projects and happy you got me going.

  5. Thanks for commenting on my giveaway, I hope you win!
I have three girls, ages 2 to 18.
I want to sew so badly. Before the two youngest arrived I had lots of time for crafts and sewing. I made "butt bags" from old jeans, I made tons of curtains and pillows.

I hope you continue to make more purses...they are awesome. I'm sure you can sell them on Etsy too.

    Take care!

  6. I have been very inspired by all your beautiful projects this month. I have even gotten my husband excited about going to the fabric store. He now knows terms like "notions" and "seam allowance."

I have a whole list of projects lined up, ready to go. I finally got fabric for family stockings, a few aprons, and for some halloween home decorations.

    Thanks for your inspiration.

  8. love, Love, LOVE your blog.
I have all boys so right now my sewing is very unfrilly :(. I'm currently working on a robot outfit. We all need one of those, right?!
Next we're going to work on Christmas pants.
Oh, and the current ongoing project is crazy quilt stockings. All hand done and the embroidery is looking awesome, but that's why it may always be ongoing.
Which reminds me, LOVE the blackbird skirt. So FABULOUS!

  9. You know, I've never loved sewing. I think it's the lack of patience and the lack of understanding pattern-vocabulary. So obviously, I'm in awe of your bazillion projects. BUT I did buy some on sale fabric and a great skirt pattern I have yet to start. And you know what...I really want to be a good seamstress deep down in there. I've just got to practice. My creative cells ache to be able to do this art!
    (I'm Ann's friend). :)

  10. That purse is ADORABLE! This month I only made one thing, an apron, but I learned a lot in the process (I haven't sewed using a pattern since clothing class in high school). I was so inspired that I raided my mother's old patterns and fabric and came home with 10 patterns to try. The first one I am making is a little dress for my girls (the pattern only has three pieces, which I think I can handle). Thanks for all the inspiration and fun this month!

  11. Katy,
My greatest sewing attempts have been with hand-stitching badge after badge on my boys' scout uniforms. You would never believe how hard it is to actually get those badges to go on straight. Grrr.
It is sad to say, but other than that, my kids always bring me their torn treasures and ask when Grandma Charlotte can fix them. :(
Also, I just wanted you to know that I absolutely LOVED your balloon skirt. It made me smile when I saw it and it still does right now when I think about it. I hope you get to wear it a lot.

  12. Katy, you have always been an inspiration to me...I just got my sewing machine back from being cleaned and having the tension knob replaced so I am ready to go with projects of my own!! First thing I am making is a lunch bag for Nate out of a rice bag...I can't wait! I also share your love of cooking so I may have to see if I can steal a few recipes from you to get some variety in our menu. You just amaze me with everything you do.

By the way...where are you going in Asia? To visit your parents? Anywhere else? Lots of Love, Rebecca Goodwin-McConnell

  13. I just finished making some cute skirts and I wanted to venture into the world of purse making. I have had the same purse for a long time and it is falling apart. Even if you don't give me the purse, I would love to find out where I can find the pattern! Thanks. You are so talented and you have inspired me to keep working at the talent that I have.
p.s. the flower hair clip you gave me is helping in the quest for a husband...two dates with a boy in one week ;)

  14. This purse is amazing, like everthing you do! I have to admit almost all the sewing I do lately is for the blanket drive for my ward to send to Africa, they are not much to look at. But as i anxiously await what you are doing next each day, I realize it is time to get more daring. Especially now that I have a little girl.My mom was always making things for me, and I really want to do the same for Ruby. I am sure you have inspired all your girls to be seamstresses!

  15. I tried to make that same bag. Mine didn't turn out nearly as beautiful as yours. You're so talented.

  16. I have needed to get back in touch with my creativity and sewing month was as good a time as any. I did 2 halloween costumes this month - altering the patterns because I like things better that way. I made an alligator turn into a dragon and added some flair to a knight. I am now working on changing a pattern made to fit an 8 year old into fitting a 30 year old male that is 6'2" 200lbs.
I covered my hat boxes in cut fabric so I could expand my notions inventory.
I have made several animal pillows and even taught myself how to embroider on them. (the skirt for the elephant is by far my favorite project)
THANK YOU for keeping me busy! I needed the due date after school was done to instill some fear and get me going. Your month of inspiration has kept me going. I haven't sewn this much since high school and I have a closet full of patterns that need altering!!

p.s. I did a new post on my blog, I think you might like.

  17. Bon Jour!
So, I went to Joann's fabric yesterday and bravely bought 10 yards of tulle to make matching poofy skirts for the girls to photograph them in. I started to work on cutting the fabric and placing it together and became so exasperated, that I vowed to take all the unopened materials back tomorrow... complete failure :)! But, I did arrange the tulle on the ground and photograph Claire amongst it... so it wasn't a complete waste ;)! Hopefully I can get some fabrics that are a little bit easier to work with soon! Ok, now onto a success... thanks for inspiring me this month to take more time with mending clothes and being more creative. I bought a beautiful lined jacket at a garage sale a couple weeks ago for $.50 (for the baby)... the only reason why it was so inexpensive was because a button had popped off. I bought new buttons from Michaels and it looks even better than new! Same thing with a beautiful Gymboree sweater. It just feel good to make it my own and make it even better :)

  18. I don't know you and I don't even know how I found your blog. But you are amazing and I am dumbfounded every time I see what new creation you have made...by yourself...with a sewing machine! I do not sew. I cannot sew. I tried once in 8th grade home ec class and my shorts somehow ended up with 3 leg holes. Go figure.

  19. Cassie,

We must have had similar patterns. The first time I attempted to make a Christmas stocking, it had no opening. But I love to keep trying, even though I'm not artistic. Sewing is like solving a big puzzle and challenges my brain.

Katy, thanks for the motivation this month!

  20. I am in awe of what you are able to do. . not sure how i found your sisters blog (my angle of repose) and then found yours. . but read and look at them both with such delight. it would be an honor to own such a cool purse!
    thanks for sharing. .

  21. You are an amazing seamstress and beader. I love reading your blog. I found it through Jordan's and her's from somewhere else. Anyway, I love to sew too, but am not half as good as you. But, I love making Halloween costumes and quilts. I'm looking forward to my three little boys three little m&ms in 31 days! The purse is beautiful!

  22. I say it all the time... I want to be you when I grow up. Really. Especially during this month. What am I going to dream about doing once this month is over? Boo. The only thing I come close to sewing is little gifts and hair clips for my girls. But, maybe... one day... ? PS. I love the purse :)

  23. Buttercup bag!! I love your personal touches!

  24. What a cute bag!!! I really can't believe everything you've sewn this month! When I was pregnant with Marcus I bought some fabric to make him a crib set. I didn't start it till after he was born, and I'm still in the process of making everything. I hope to have some pictures up of his bedding soon, so I'm going to sit down at my machine right now and hopefully get something accomplished tonight!

  25. I am going to {try to} make matching Christmas stockings for my husband and I this year. I have some cute fabric picked out. It can't be too hard, can it?

  26. And you said no one read your blog? Goes to show you! Ummm...I started on a skirt:) and have mended 3 shirts.

  27. Lucy's skirt. Is still sitting in a bag stashed in my closet.

But, the garden is nearly all weeded. We had friends (with four kids) over for dinner. I canned applesauce. I created a guest room out of nothing. I put up Halloween decor and...and...can you forgive me?

I think my sewing foray will have to wait until you live "up the road" and I can grow as a seamstress under your tutelage.

You inspire me by how much you inspire others.

    Love you sis.

  28. WOW, it looks like a LOT of people are really wanting this adorable bag! I think you know first hand how hard I am working on my sewing skills:) I can't wait to start posting all of my sewing projects. However, I am starting small. My next project is Halloween trick-or-treating bags!!

  29. Katy, you have totally depressed me. You are too talented to be just one person and you're so ambitious and have so much energy. And you are so good at everything. And it isn't right to start a sentence with And. I know, I know. Yes, sewing month was totally depressing for me.

  30. You are very talented. I love the bag. You picked a great fabric.

I'm don't sew much, I don't even have a machine. If I did I'd like to think I'd learn how to use it, and make dresses for my baby girls (I have one so far.) And whatever else my heart desired. I've always wanted to sew.

  31. I've loved seeing and reading about all your sewing projects. I actually tried to copy project #2, but my sleeves didn't turn out quite right and was going to ask you how wide and how long you made the ones for that dress. I'm also planning on making a tinkerbell costume using the same idea, hopefully it will turn out well, and then she can add it to her dress up box later. Thanks for all the inspiration.

  32. I love the unexpected fabrics, color choices, and embellishments that you use in your projects. Their uniqueness inspires me to branch out.

Sewing is a passion, but the only sewing I do now is with my grandchildren. Last project was an Amy Butler sling bag with nine-year old Kate (she hates backpacks) out of paisley and polka dots. The girl has an eye! I think the boys love sewing because it's like driving a race car.

  33. I can't sew to save my life, but I love reading your blog and seeing the beautiful things that you have made. I did make a stuffed animal in my 7th grade sewing glass that my mom still has. It is a sad looking bear.
    You are absolutely amazing.
My mom is friends with Ryan's mom and I went to high school with Ryan, so I am not a creepy stalker person
I love this purse. so darling

  35. Look at all these people you've inspired Katy! And it includes me most of all! :)

I bought some REALLY neat material and I'm in the process of combining different patterns to make it how I want. I'll let you know.

  36. beautiful. just beautiful. is sewing month over? no more daily fabulous creations to peak-in on? i absolutely loved your sewing soriee. what a fabulous night!

i used to sew hand bags from placemats, and even put a magnet clasp on one. sadly it tore right through the lining of the bag (can you believe i actually lined one?).

anyways, i did not sew anything this month. however, last month i sewed 25 school kit bags for our ward's humanitarian project. now i am trying to talk my lovey into buying me a new sewing machine - a bernina 630 (Dave's Bernina in downtown Provo has a great deal. plus it comes with 6 free classes!). we'll see...

would love to see the overcoat you made for ryan too

  37. Brand new here, but beginners luck is on my side right? I once sewed denim quilts for my 2 sons using pockets and zipper squares from old jeans. I had other fabrics mixed in as well. Too bad I had no idea how to tie a quilt properly and just did it on my living room floor with a sheet as backing. They looked good for a while but started falling apart over the years. I wish I had enough time to do more bc the stuff on their beds now is crap!

  38. I downloaded that pattern for my 11 year old to make last month....and she just picked out the fabric the other day...orange and white. I love that she loves to sew and create...a nice connection for the 2 of us! Thanks for all the inspiration.
