I Don't Believe in Luck

I used to.  I had a rabbit's foot on my backpack zipper pull.  I spent a ridiculous amount of time on our lawn growing up searching for that one 4-leaf clover.  Of course I do believe in probability, the laws of genetics {and the universe in general}, and agency, not just mine, but everyone's.  Those all play a part in our existence, but I try not to even say such things as, "You're so lucky," but replace it with blessed.  Truly, every good thing comes from God.  I believe that.  I don't feel like I recognize His hand enough.  Was it luck that I was born to {nearly} perfect parents?  Was it luck that I found Ryan to marry?  Was it luck that I had 5 beautiful daughters?   A resounding negative! Our God knows the number of hairs on our head, and our Savior knows even the smallest sorrow in our heart.  They know the blessings that we need, just as they know the trials that we need, whether those trials are to refine us or, in some cases, to bless others.  We may not know in this life which category our trials fall, but we are promised that we won't be given anything we can't handle.  That is comforting to me, because sometimes I'm really weak.

  3. Thank you for your wisdom beauty and marrying Ryan. I wouldn't have the blessings that are received from your precious, practically perfect, parented properly princesses.

  6. You are absolutely right that sometimes our trials are not really for us as much as to benefit others. A good friend of mine in college wondered why she went through a particularly trying experience...until I went through a similar trial on a much deeper and grander scale. She was literally the only person I could turn to for empathy, comfort and perspective at that time. She was a blessing to me because of what she had been through, and she suddenly realized why she had had that trial of her own.

    A great post, thanks.
