C is for Collar, Chairs, Chinese, Contrast & Checkered

If you're new, I am taking the challenge to create a letter themed outfit to correspond with Clover's preschool class letter of the week

Judging from the comments on the last post, it seems I have a sleep-deprived group of readers!  I've so enjoyed reading what everyone would do given a weekend to themselves (and yes, I've read them ALL).  Besides sleeping, it looks like there will be lots of sewing, reading, a bit of relaxing and some beach time!  Perhaps now that we've all written out the wishes of our hearts, we can make them come true?
I do hope so.  Meanwhile, C week has come to a close with stamped chairs along the hemline, 3/4 sleeves, a collar,
checkered buttons and some contrasting bias tape.  This was another one of my own designs, made out of some cotton knit for comfort for the schoolgirl.  I had to cut out about 6 different collars until I got it just right, but lucked out on the sleeves the first time.
On the way to school, I was drilling Clover to make sure she could tell her teacher all the c's she was "wearing".
I think she just remembered the chairs.  Ah, well.  I'll cut her some slack, seeing how she was mostly excited about being able to make cookies at school.  Don't blame her, right?
So, what's up with the Chinese, you ask?  As I was feverishly working to get it done the night before, Ryan was sitting on a beanbag in the sewing studio to keep me company and said, you should have done Chinese!  Well, NOW you tell me!  But the last hour is usually when I perform best, so I whipped out our Chinese family stamp my parents got in Taiwan when we were first married.
Voila.  Chinese!
And as I was doing Clover's hair before whisking her off to school, she said thank you, mommy, for making me all these dresses!
She knows just what to say, that girl.

  2. I love that you are doing this. Now I just need my grand daughter to grow up a bit so I can copy you. I remember cranking out the dresses for my own daughter. Each one had to be "the most beautiful dress she has ever seen." Fortunately she was easy to please and each one was. Keep it up since there are a lot of us taking notes!

  5. Tami B--oh, you are just too kind :)

Auntie--the time will come all too soon, though, right?

Bless by Tone--she's a heart winner--she sometimes says "Mommy! You ARE nice!" Like it's a surprise.

Lynette--it might be more than I can undertake, but I'm going to try! ;)

  7. My girls both still like handmade clothes (and argue over whose turn it is to get something). My oldest (almost 12) is looking for things that look like the stuff she sees in the store.

But my little one (7), appreciates the ability to have truly personalized clothes. She was ecstatic when I made her a dress with panels of fabric with cakes and sweets. And now that she has fallen in love with green and orange, she is excited that Mommy makes her clothes in her favorite colors (all the hand-me-downs are more pink and purple).

I love getting thank-yous from them, but when they are excited about the item really inspires me to do more.

  9. What a sweetie! Love the last picture and the collar and trim are amazing! Is the collar part of the bodice or is it a separate piece? Also, I can't stop thinking about your B dress.

  10. Andrea--thank you :)

Indywriter--I'm hoping my girls will always like my handmade, too.

    SuzyMcQ--thanks!

Emily--the collar is separate, as is the little "bib" piece.

  12. Sweet stuff here, in your post and the comments.
Those innocent and sincere thank you's from our children are just the best!

I think the chair stamps are really neat. I would like that on...curtains, or furniture covers or something...love it on the "C" dress, too. But it is neat, neat fabric that way!

  22. This is a STUNNING dress! You did a great job and Clover looks just beautiful. As a kindergarten teacher, I am enjoying your 'letter of the week' series. When my daughter went to kindergarten, the first two weeks of school were devoted to the 'color of the day'. I made her a dress for every one of those ten days! My favorite was a red checked print pinafore dress with little farm animals all over it. Memories...She's in college now.

  23. Those little comments of appreciation make it so much more enjoyable, doesn't it? Now whenever I am sewing, knitting, or crocheting my 3 year old will ask me "mommy, what are you making me?" I have been doing some selfish sewing recently and have chuckled to myself when she asks. When I finished her Halloween costume the other night she asked if it was her brothers turn now. She wanted me to make him something. I thought it was sweet of her to share. :)

  25. I was a preschool teacher for years, I can only imagine how excited the teacher and children are to see what dress will be next. As for free time, I just treated myself to 5 days in Seattle at a retreat. It was divine! :)

  26. I think the dresses are amazing but I have to laugh at what all the other parents in the class are thinking - I can barely get my kid dressed and she's making a new letter dress each week - you are awesome!

  27. I missed the original post, but to all of you mums out there listing all the things you would do with a weekend to yourselves:

I'm a single, bohemian, gypsy and if you asked me what I would most want to do with my weekend it would be to spend the entire thing taking care of my 6 months and 2 year old nephews.
