Big Beauteous Bubbles

Ryan knows I love beverage.  I thought my offspring would automatically share this affinity since they do have half my genes, and were most likely fed some nonstop in utero.  Sadly, not so.  There are some who are more adventurous when it comes to culinary endeavors, which we always appreciate.  I think 3 were brave enough to try this--a beverage I first had last year in Boston when Ryan and I snuck off for the weekend.  He took me to a restaurant in Chinatown across from a fabric store...which reminds me I found the most delightful cotton prints, kind of India-esque, that I've yet to use and ought to pull out for some summer sewing...where was I?  Beverage.  Yes.  This is an avocado smoothie with tapioca pearls at the bottom.
Ever since then I have wanted to recreate it.  On a whim last week, after taking our weekly visit to the library, I stopped by our favorite Asian grocery store [how we LOVE that place!]  I asked one of the workers if they carried the big tapioca balls you put in drinks.  She pointed to an aisle and said, you'll see them.  And boy howdee was she right!  I was expecting just the black, flavorless balls, but take a look at what my thirsty little eyes beheld!  I know!  I quickly grabbed one of each flavor while the endorphins flooded my brain, even NEW SAGO, which I had no idea what flavor that would be, and was getting ready to pay when I thought the paramount elation would be to have THE STRAW.  That giant straw that allows you to suck up those chewy little morsels.  I approached another girl and said with a heavy dose of doubt, you wouldn't happen to carry the straws that....and before I could finish my sentence, she was pointing to the far end of the store where they carried the JUMBO STRAW!
As I drove home I think the baby dills wondered why I was so happy.  Their mother was daydreaming about her avocados she had waiting to be translated into a sweet, novelty of a beverage.  So, what are these, exactly?  They are made from tapioca flour and, quite honestly, taste like slimy gummy bears.  Describing them, I'm not sure why I have such a penchant for them.  We had two guests pop in while we were whipping this up and only one was brave enough to try it ;)  I guess it's just kind of fun to strategically suck up the balls and have a little something to chew on?  I think I'm making it worse.  They're just enjoyable.
All you do is gently boil them for a few minutes in water.  They plump up and get shiny and slimy.  Just like you want them.  I always love reading the translated English on the back.  It tells you not to fear the white cornstarch powder, hehe.  Oh, I don't fear!  Make your Avocado Smoothie while you wait for them to cook:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4-1/2 cup milk

Blend it all up!  Run cold water over the bubbles and then place some in a glass and pour beverage on top.  For those who don't drink milk, we've also made it with almond milk and a bit of sugar and it was comparably as pleasurable.  I find it interesting that in many of the Asian cultures the avocado is not used for savory dishes as it is in America, but for sweets.  We just like to confuse everyone, don't we.  While I was paying for my bubbles and straws I noticed a cardboard box full of lychees behind the counter and got a pound of those for Ryan and Clover and Divine and Pearl and Olive and Azure.  Okay, and I had a couple.
Back to the bubbles.  With flavored "bubbles" the possibilities are inexhaustible.  I'm thinking mango lassi with the mango bubbles [can I mix cultures like that?] and even just a plain old orange julius with the cranberry bubbles.  Oh, it's going to get exciting around here, not to mention blueberry picking season is upon us and blueberry beverage bedecked with blueberry bubbles...bewitching, no? I should have had Ryan take a picture of me happily sipping, but I have super sonic speed when it comes to beverage inhalation.
But, really, how long will it take me to use up all these bubbles?  Exactly.  I think I am willing to part with one.  Maybe two packages?  Plus straws, of course, because I am picturing the vehement vexation of one of you trying to use a regular straw, hehe.  Still picturing it...concave cheeks, fish lips and crossed eyes.  Leave a comment.  Do you have an unusual culinary creation?   What do you enjoy more than your family enjoys?  I'll choose a couple of someones next week how 'bout.

Bon Bubbletite!

  1. Bubble tea is so my favorite! I recently had watermelon and it was delicious. I think avocado would be fantastic too. My strangest food combination is cantaloupe with hot sauce or carrots with hot sauce. I basically love hot sauce!:)

  2. Avocado Smoothie sounds so yummy! I can't wait to try it. My snack of choice, that my family just can't seem to appreciate, is seaweed...especially wasabi flavored...although I love to snack on them all!

  3. I actually just read about these on another blog recently, but she made hers with some type of juice or bubbly soda or something? I think the possibilities are probably endless! No drinks for me though, no asian markets locally!

  4. In Singapore, we love bubble tea and we put the pearls into milk tea, coffee, green tea, soya milk and all sorts of flavored drinks.

  5. I remember my first boba, couldn't get enough for a while but now I prefer green algae, it's a lot less chewing work to put into a "beverage". My all-time favorites are taro black milk tea, no bubbles and mango icee with green algae.
Hope you're feeling good and surviving the heat, you look lovely!

  6. I love Boba! I am definitely going to have to make one of these for myself. My hubby doesn't like it at all, he says that you shouldn't have to chew a drink :)

  7. Katy, your mom had mango bubbles in her frozen yogurt just last week! She let me sample. SO FUN and YUM!

  8. We use these all the time, but usually I have to wait for them to get here from AMAZON...no asian store close here. My kids LOVE them in their green smoothies! If feel like a kid when I drink them, they taste like gummy bears or something :)

Love avocado papaya smoothies! Perfect in this hot weather! I a beverage gal too :)

  9. P.S. you need to try the popping boba too!

  10. Yum. I first saw this on Postcards From Buster (the PBS show). Theirs was called bubble tea, and it seemed more like an italian soda with the tapioca pearls. :)

I've always wanted to try them. I have one culinary adventurous kid. My girls won't try anything, even with a bribe of money. But my boy will try anything once. And usually he'll have it again.

  11. LOVE bubble tea! For some reason I've never thought of making it at home. It always seems so convenient to purchase one of the bazillion flavor combos at the shop. I would love to experiment on my own. (Now I have to go shopping...)

  12. I'm pretty sure just my oldest son (4yrs old) and I would enjoy these! The mango and cranberry ones have caught my eye. Now I'm wondering if there is a place near me where I could find these! And avacado smoothies sound awesome to me... the avacado is my favorite veggie (fruit?). Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Love this! An avocado smoothie sounds great right now, especially boba-style! Orange Julius with cranberry also sounds superb...we've been making cranberry orange scones for a couple of weeks now and it's one of my favorite flavor combinations.

My entire family is pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but as far as I know I'm the only one who loves hummus. I make it from scratch in all different flavors, make my own pita chips, and would probably eat it every day if I was smart enough to keep a big stock of chick peas.

  14. Out in Ann Arbor Michigan we have a place called Bubble Island that sells all of these drinks with bubbles. My favorite is milk tea with lychee jellies! yum!

  15. Never thought of making these at home, there are so many places to get bubble tea near my office. I like the idea of making it at home though, because although I like the bubbles, I think they put in too many when you get it at a tea place. I never knew there were different flavors of boba.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I never had those. But I would love to try! I like almost everything and every flavour except anything with bananas.
I guess I would try the bubbles in a drink with mangos, lime and a splash of chilliflakes mixed in.

  17. I love bubble tea! Just seeing your post makes me want to head to the bubble tea place a few blocks from here to get some. When I first discovered I could make my own at home, I went overboard. Let me warn you: don't go too crazy with all those bubbles or you might experience a little, erm, blockage. Still, in moderation, bubble tea is the bomb. My weirdest food combinations used to come in the form of sandwiches. I was particularly fond of potato bread, mustard, cheese, and bread&butter pickles or pumpernickel bread, chunky peanut butter and cheese. Both sound so odd, but taste so good. I'm gluten-free now so I can't eat them any more... sad!

  18. I can't wait to try an avacado smoothie! I will have to look on amazon for the flavored tapioca pearls since my small town definitley won't carry them.
My favorite weird food combination is frito chips and ketchup yum!

  19. I love bubble tea. There is something about those slimy little balls of chewiness that are so good! The funniest memory of having a bubble tea was my husband grabbing it to take a drink and the look on his face as he got a bubble. He thought it was chocolate before he drank it. I can imagine that would be disappointing! lol

  20. That sounds really yummy. I never would have thought of making an avocado drink.
My mother and I make caviar mousse around Christmas/New Years every year. The black caviar turns the mousse a pale greenish color, so lots of people won't try it. BUT it's tastes super yummy paired with toast.

  21. I can't wait to try this and have got to get to the Asian market today!

  22. I love sweetened condensed milk and would be happy drinking it alone so add avocado, milk, ice, and tapioca balls? Yes please.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love those things. I never even thought of trying to buy them, I going to go looking for them today! My kids all love them and in fact my 3rd calls them gummy bears, so I think thats an apt description!

  24. First time I saw these was in college- I stared at a girl drinking one through the entire lecture. I was mesmerized but felt too silly to ask what on earth she drinking or where she got it. Eventually I figured it out but have yet to try. But gummy bears are my favorite candy so now might be time!! Too bad I've moved and have no idea where to find one now.

  26. Oh I simply LOVE this fun yummy delicious treat in my smoothies!! I crave these at the Asian restaurant. It's not close to us..so I don't get them often. I would love to try and make them on my own!! Thank you for the chance.

  29. I love beverages. I gave up my Diet Coke habit almost a year ago and have really incorporated into my diet more water and other fun beverages into my diet. I tried a Lychee flavored bubble tea when I was in San Francisco in January. It was really good and I want to try other flavors. I will have to visit my local asian market to get some ingredients. I want to try the avocado one.

  31. We love boba! Have you seen the new kind of pearls; the ones that burst with juice inside?! I haven't tried those yet, but my husband says they are fun! I like the one called "Morning Sunrise" that our local cafe serves. It has mangoes, peaches, orange, banana and yogurt. Oh, it is so delicious!

  32. Wow. I have never even heard of such a thing. My husband and I are suckers for strange foods. When we were first together we went into a Greek furniture store in Canada. They had a small selection of Greek foods, and we bought a very thick substance called 'mastic' which we were told to put on a spoon and stir in a glass of water. It is supposedly dessert. We tried it, but the fact that 11 years later it is still in our cupboard should tell you something.

  33. I've only tried bubble tea once - years ago. it was a bit shocking as I had some non-Asian speaking delusion that the balls were blueberries...
I have a serious pregnancy craving for a mango lassi now, though...and I think I'll be buying some avocados as well. Mmm mmm.

  34. Sago is all the woody goodness, the marrow, of the sago palm tree. Just some off-beat info for your enlightment (-; Once saw a fascinating program from Papua New Guinea in which the indigenous inhabitants worked and reworked the grainy pulp of these palms to finally come up with an edible gelatinous mass. Seeing stuff like that always makes me wonder how they figured it out in the first place, like who was it who woke up one morning and decided to eat a tree? Ah, the many wonders of food on this planet...Enjoy your bubbles.

  35. I think its normal but I put frozen Kale/chard/spinach or any other type of green in my smoothie. Along with kiwi's with the skin on. My whole family thinks I eat weird stuff but to me, its just normal.

  36. I love, love, love, honey. My favorite part of the fair is going to the honey vendors and buying every flavor of honey imaginable...though my love of honey is not as enthusiastically reciprocated by my love and babies. Cinnamon honey is among my favorite...what I really like is to blend up peanut butter and honey and use it as a dip for my fave fruits and veggies.

As for avocados, I've never thought to use them for something sweet...maybe I'd like them better that way :)

  37. That avocado smoothie sounds so yummy and those tapioca pearls look like a blast. I must try some!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yum! The girls would love this. I actually make a similar shake, but add 1 cup fresh spinach and use vanilla yogurt instead of the sweet milk. We call it a Shamrock Shake (i introduced it on St. Patty's day and they all love it).

  39. I love boba! Boba and avocado smoothies remind me of home.

I'm glad you like it too!

  40. I too am beverage obsessed! I am thinking I need to rush out right now and get some of these!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Fascinating! That looks so intriguing. I definitely want to try it.

I'm the frightened adventuress when it comes to cooking in our family. I tend to gather up all of these interesting recipes and then dare to make them. . . of course. . . during the process of making whatever it is, I am frightened half to death that it won't turn out . . . or maybe it's just the dubious looks I'm getting from my family that make me feel that way. :D

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow! Sounds delish. I've heard of bubble tea before, but have never heard the tapioca balls described as "slimy gummy bears" that makes me really want to try them- really :-)

  43. How fun!! My son & I love Boba. We have a few places to choose from around here, but our favorite is PEARL tea house...:D

  44. I had those once, in Manhattan when I was eleven. Brings back memories. I'd love to have some to share with my hubby and daughter.

I love cream cheese and green olive sandwiches. No one else in my family seems to 'get ' them. So I have to buy little jars of green olives just for me. I wish my hubby realized how yummy they are.

    ReplyDelete
  45. wow I've never heard of those till now sounds fun:)

  46. Yum - we have been missing these. There is a fabulous place we used to go in Chicago's Chinatown to get them & avocado was always our favorite, too! My brother in law gags at the sight of these, but we could eat them all day long :). I'm not sure where we would find them now that we're in Maine, so it would be lovely to win a package!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Nummy nummy. We just love a boba tea in my house... though, my little guy hasn't tried it [choking hazard]. My fav is in a coffee shake. Yum, right?

  48. Yum! I could easily drink all of my daily allowed nutrients. My one-year-old twins are just learning to drink out of a straw. I make them avocado, berry, and cinnamon smoothies. They love it! My favorite food treat is a scone. My husband won't even take a bit of one. I once entered a basil and marmalade scone recipe into a magazine contest, he told me they weren't any good. The recipe placed as a runner-up! Ha!

  49. I saw your smoothie and started to google. Unfortunately in Germany they only sell those black tapioka perls for a price that takes my breath away. So we have to wait til it becomes more popular in Germany. My family of 10 (5boys+3girls) have mixed opions about smoothies (I love them). 1 girl and 3 boys think it´s way too healthy :))We tried your peach rosemary juice and loved it. Thanks for sharing. Love from Germany

  51. This is so fun!! I know I could have gotten these from my little Asian market where I used to live in the Bay Area but I'm feeling sadly that my new town doesn't seem to have a market to fill my need for all foods Asian... :) My unusual culinary creation for my family is sushi. I can't make it enough for my family, we love it, I love making it, it's been a little too long since I've made it so thanks for the reminder!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've never tried it but I'm excited to. I'll have to check out our asian market.
The willingness by my children to try new things really changes from day to day and it never ceases to amaze me who likes what. It seems I always get it wrong.
So we'll see who likes this new adventure in tasting.
Mango sounds awefully good to me.

  53. Love bubble drinks! Just so much more fun than plain smoothies. A little chewy, a little sweet, a little bit of a choking hazard... Can't think of an unusual culinary creation, but your description reminded me of one time at Fuddruckers when we found a straw that was sealed at one end - we stuck it in my sister's shake when she was gone and laughed our heads off when she tried and tried to suck up her "super thick" shake.

  54. I need to try this avacado smoothie!- I had bubble tea once at the insistance of a friend. it was interesting. - try soda crackers, with a processed cheese slice, and half a marshmallow on top- broil until the marshmallow is toasty and enjoy. yum! (my grandma used to make those!)-oh, and I am totally inspired to sew my girls swim suits! thanks!

  55. Flavored bobas??? That's amazing! I should totally be able to find these here in San Francisco...why have I never seen them before? I'm thinking a big jug of minty peach sun tea with mango bubbles. Oh my gosh. Now I need to schedule a little shopping adventure this week!

    ReplyDelete
  56. oh Bubble tea is really popular around here (lots of asian people with shops) I"m not fond of the consistency... but they are fun. We go to this little cafe and they serve Red Bean bubble tea milkshakes. they taste like fruit loops with gummy bears inside. Weird. :) Enjoy!

  57. My Brazilian husband loves avocado sweetened with condensed milk. It's a favorite over there. I love cream cheese with a weird passion but that is as weird as I get. Would love to try these. Super fun.

  58. Your sister, Ashley, introduced me to these years ago. So much fun. We went to a place in Provo that served Boba drinks. Sat on funny couches, sucking up our tapioca balls.

  59. OH, you've opened my world! I make myself avacodo smoothies probably three times a week, but have never considered the thought of "bubbles" inside!! I will be looking at our nearest asian food market for sure! But it would be even funner to win some from you!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I used to be crazy for those little balls!! SOO good!! Sadly, my hubby doesn't like chocolate. Although that usually just means more for me when people give us See's!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I do enjoy these tiny "fish eggs"!!! What an interesting mix with avocados!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yumm-O!!! This makes me want to run out for a bubble tea!

    ReplyDelete
  63. This makes me want to be a bit more adventurous! ;-) I've never tried tapioca pearls, but I'm pretty sure if I bought some I'd have them all to myself. My husband and all offspring are far less adventurous! I can't think of anything too crazy off the top of my head, but I do love my chocolate cake (day or two old) in a bowl of cold milk or applesauce with saltines. Yum!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love everything avocado so I am pretty sure I would like this. The bubbles remind me of my kids favorite favorite drink - Swamp Juice! I made it for them around Halloween and added small tapioca pearls soaked in (natural) food coloring for the fish eggs. I found the plain pearls in our regular grocery store. I wonder if they taste any different than the ones you bought. Anyway, it was a huge hit in the preschool class and my girls still talk about it, fish eggs and all. Here is a link to the recipe I used: http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/swamp-juice-784944/

Oh, and I still haven't made it to that great Boston fabric store that you mentioned. Someday soon I hope. Thanks for the info!

  65. They're also super tasty in sweetened tea. We have a tea shop in our hood that serves them in a sweetened milky Thai tea that's great hot or cold. Or go full force and serve them with tropical fruit and shaved ice - talk about addictive!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I moved to a place where I had easy access to asian shops to where I would have to drive up to an hour. Now I wish I had known more about these things!
I've tried bubble tea like most people and your drink sounds pretty tasty,(considering there is avocado. hehe) and I think those sago balls would go well with "ice kachang" which is an asian dessert with shaved ice and sweetened condensed milk, syrup and seaweed jelly if I remember correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow that sounds like a drink to try. I've always liked asian twists on sweet and fun treats. Mango puddings, sticky rice balls.. yum!

  68. This reminds me of being in Thailand on our honeymoon and we asked for a tomato juice with breakfast (which was an awesome pork omelette), and got something we could only describe as a tomato milkshake! Interesting for a few sips then it became just plain yuk....

  71. Ok, so I have never heard of these before. I have been meaning to add avocado to a smoothie though. You describe this drink with such excitement I think I'll have to try it, if I ever have the chance. Little nervous yes, but your enthusiasm is too contagious to turn it down. Thanks for sharing.

  72. I seem to be in the minority here. I have never heard of bubble tea! Five of my kids will try just about anything. I love cheese...all kinds. I just discovered goat cheese. YUM! When I'm pregnant I eat toasted cheese by the pound and everyone thinks I'm crazy. I throw a handful on the griddle after I make the kids quesadillas and wait until it is toasted..man that is soooo good!

  73. My mom is obsessed with bubble tea! Never made it home though. Sounds fun!

  74. I haven't had bubble tea in forever. I love a good beverage though. When I am pregnant I like to eat Wheat thins, dijonaise mustard and cheddar cheese. When I run out of cheese I just eat the wheat thins and mustard.

  75. The bubbles are even better if you boil them in brown sugar water! Look online for the proper concentration, but that's how I have always had them and they are so yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  76. DON'T eat those if they're from Taiwan!! There's been all over the news that a manufacturer supplier put DEHA to some food addictive, affecting almost over 200 food and drink, candy and snack manufacturers in Taiwan. These bubbles might be affected!! Take care!

  77. i've never tried bubble tea - but i'd like to.
an odd food creation passed down in my family is called olive salad. green olives, walnuts, eggs, mayo...i remember as a child bringing the grayish/brownish smeared sandwiches to school for lunch and trying to hide them because i didn't want to have to explain to anyone what they were. the funny thing is - my mom gave the recipe to one of my friends and she started serving it as an appetizer at dinner parties and it was all the rage! (as long as she waited to tell people what it was until after they tried it)

  78. After reading Arbitrariness today I realized I intended to comment on this a couple of days ago and didn't. My husband and I LOVE bubble tea but after moving we don't have a local place that sells the beverage and I haven't found a fun asian mart like I'm used to having. But you inspired me to take action so I ordered 3 large bags of tapioca pearls online to surprise the hubby! Thanks. Oh and if you haven't tried them, Green Tea and Taro are my favorite flavors. Always enjoy your posts!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I love bubble tea! Our local place closed, and I didn't know I could find them at the asian shop! Oooh, I'll have to pick them up! Yummm! I think it's the sensation of the slimy ball in your mouth that people find so rewarding to drink/ eat.

  87. Boba sounds delicious and I know my 4 year old would love those bubbles at the bottom :). I can't think of any strange things I consume that my family doesn't also enjoy, except sushi but there are a LOT of people scared of sushi. Their loss really.

  88. Thanks so much for posting this! Right before we moved from CA to TN a friend introduced me to tea with boba and I fell in love. I didn't know that I could find these in the Asian Market and make them for myself. Thanks for making my night!

  89. yes, Chin Wern is right! Singapore is big on bubble tea. There was a boom many years back, then it died down and most of the shops closed. But it is back again! with better quality tea and more bubble-types! ... Anyways, I wanted to drop you a note to tell you that the pearls are really high on calories so go slow on feeding them to the kids! :)

  90. That sounds DELICIOUS! We have a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese place here in town that sells the bubble tea and I LOVE it. I enjoy fried pickles like nobody's business (slices, not spears) but none of my family can stand them!

  91. I had my first taste of "Boba" when I lived in CA. While I was pregnant with my first, I ordered some online as we now live in rural CO where we cannot find boba products anywhere. If you haven't tried it, I'd highly recommend the Taro flavor. It's a beautiful purple color and has an AMAZING flavor. The lady as the restaurant where we bought our boba recommended it up on asking which one we should try. Coconut and Taro smoothies with boba are so delicious. I might just have to bust out my boba supplies and make some tonight!!

  92. So I've only had Bubble tea once, and I really enjoyed it - Till my husband accidentally spilled it all over. I would love to try it again - I had been really enjoying those little pearls.

Plus, I could really use something awesome right now. My husband started a new job 5 hours away, Our house just went up for sale, We've taken 3 trips out to look at houses and found nothing that works for us, our car just broke down so we bought a new one, and my grandfather passed away 2 weeks ago. Did I mention I have a 10 month old too?

Maybe that's too much for tapioca pearls to fix. But it couldn't hurt. Then again, this comment is probably coming too late.

    Cheers anyway! Lovely blog.

  93. Oh my gosh I just moved from Las Vegas to Florida and they have NO Boba tea places here. I nearly cried. It never occurred to me to try to make my own!

  95. Our favorite thing the last year is making up our own homemade ice cream flavors. We haven't tried anything too crazy yet, although I've threatened my kids on making avacado/bacon ice cream! :)

  96. I'm crazy about everything coconut. My favorite is just it's natural non-sweetened flavor, or in savory dishes, but coconut milk smoothies are amazing! I'd love to try it with some of these fun bubbles in the bottom.
