Treasures & Teeth

One child's trash is another's treasure
I love to discover how some things are adored, and treasured by my children, while other's are tossed to the wayside.  It's seems I have no talent in predicting in which category any given item will fall.  No rhyme or reason, really.  Ryan tells me I'm the same way--unpredictable in my tastes.  I don't think I am.  Or perhaps they change with age.  Others never change, like enjoying the magic of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books, as do my children.

Speaking of age, why is it that I feel exponentially older with each tooth lost?  Divine lost one of her front teeth and it made me feel even older.  I do think her toothless grin is cute (we disagree here, Jennifer.)  It doesn't slow her down, though.  We
had artichokes that she ate with great skill and speed, as well as corn on the cob, not a kernel was missed.  I am always told (especially by strangers) that I need to enjoy these ages.  I am trying.  Really I am.  Yesterday Pearl asked me, "I like Ms. Frizzle.  Do you know why your kids love Ms. Frizzle (have any of you seen the Magic School Bus?)"  I asked her why, and she responded, "Because she is so clever!"  So are you, my dear children.  I will enjoy and not wish away this time and these ages.  They are playing a game of "Hide and Squeeze" right now.

  1. It is fun to see what kids treasure. I love when they first find something, the joy, and the excitement in their faces and voices. That is my own treasure. We agree with Pearl, we also think Ms. Frizzle is so clever and Luke wants a bus like that so he can go to all the fun places. We can tell you are enjoying this age, your children are so full of character, and you are letting them blossom.

  2. Is Hide and Squeeze a new version of Hide and Seek?

  5. I remember collecting cool rocks from our neighbors' yards and then trying to sell them on the street corner!

  6. Katy, this is an appropriate post since I am at this very moment going through your treasures: bags of odds and ends, tile, rocks, foreign coins, shells, buttons. I smiles as I looked at these treasures thinking now you are having children collecting these same things. Such an amazing colliding of thoughts.

  7. Oh man...that little girl would be BEAUTIFUL no matter how many of her teeth were missing.
I, too, am trying to enjoy this time instead of wishing it away. Thanks for the reminder.
