Completion of a Coat

The deadline was 11:59pm EST, May 31, 2007. I beat it by 4 minutes. It reminded me of being in High School, nearing the great "Made it With Wool" contest. We would spend the last week pulling all nighters with our beloved teacher, Barbara Price, and her daughters, frantically stitching, pulling out stitching, and doing it again. We clothing students thrived on this thrill.  It would be a room full of creativity, the buzz of machines, chatting, and laughter, dark outside, but full of life inside.  I missed the comraderie of a fellow sewer last night.  Everyone in my household was asleep, and I was alone with my thoughts.  I thoroughly enjoy the process of sewing.  I love to take that flat piece of material (a word, by the way, I misspelled in an Elementary spelling bee), and through technique and design, shape it into a new creation to be worn and used.  I love the fine details and leaving my fingerprints of design.  I had momentary panic about 10:00 last night about buttons.  Would giant green buttons be too much? Calling Jordan and my parents (good thing they're 3 and 2 hours behind us) we conferred and decided it was appropriate for a contest, to pull out the big guns..I mean buttons.  After more mistakes than I've made since High School, I had 4 minutes to spare.  I hoped all this was worth a trip for two to Paris......or at least that there will be a day cold enough for me to wear this here in Florida.

  1. The coat is beautiful and well worth the late night. There is something about staying up late at night and creating that does have some magic in it. Thanks for including us in that magic!

  2. KATY!! It turned out SO well. I'm glad you decided on the big green buttons. The piping adds that extra je ne sais quoi (sp?)--appropriate for a trip to Paris. Well done, your midnight oil-burning did not fail you!!

  4. I'm just HOPING to go to Paris--that is the grand prize for the sewing contest (highly doubtful that I'd really win). Just hoping...although I did go to state competition for Make it With Wool in high school!

PS I would certainly tell you if I went!!!
