Speaking of Green

A question I frequently get asked:
What is your countertop [with the follow up question, Do you ever get tired of it?]

When we were getting ready to replace our countertop [out of necessity], Ryan and I went to Lowe's to check out the possibilities.  We wanted something of higher quality than laminate, but not so expensive as marble/granite.  What we found:  Formica Solid Surfacing!
We considered putting in a nice, safe neutral, you know, just in case we moved soon, for resale.  But then Ryan said, "Katy, just get the color you really want."  So, I did.
CITRON ICE

The guy who came to install it said they had been working in the industry for 30 years and had never put this color in anyone's house.

He said they got a lot of stares as they drove from the store to our house with giant slabs of this green beauty in the back of their truck.

Just last week when we came home from Kissammee [that's only an invitation to Ryan], I walked into the kitchen and thought these exact words, "I'm so glad we put in these countertops.  They make me happy every time I see them."  And I see them a lot.

These are actually "stock" photos, since I was too lazy to take new ones [and clean the kitchen to this degree]. I've since painted the cupboard knobs [again] a more closely matching shade of green, and we have gotten a new all white dishwasher [which not only looks nice, it works like a dream--Ryan thinks it sounds like one of those water features people buy instead of Niagra Falls].  Oh, and we've since eaten all that produce.  Don't worry, it's not sitting there rotting.

  1. I have a hard time imagining you considering a safe neutral.

  3. its great that you went with your favourite choice not a neutral...the kitchen is the heart of the home and for you its a lovely one. i wish my kitchen was a brighter colour but it was here when we moved in and our pocket is not big enough to change it!

  5. Your countertops are the best! Green is by far my favorite color and all I've been able to talk my husband into is one green wall in the kitchen. (And lots of other green accessories!)

  6. I looooooove that green, and I wish I had it in my kitchen. But you know what thought popped into my head as I scrolled through the pics? "She keeps a Threads magazine in the KITCHEN?! What if something HAPPENED to it?!" I'm a bit, um, protective of my Threads.

  7. great color. it makes a room that much better when you picked something because you love it, not just because it's practical.

my favorite thing to do when i read your blog is play "i spy anthro."

i work for anthropologie and love spotting the fun things you've accumulated...and also how cute your girls are. :)

  9. You made the right choice. That green is fantastic, and I love how it looks with the white. You inspire me to live with color in a more bold way. I'm so tired of tan and other boring neutral colors!

  10. You'll never grow tired of it because you chose what you loved and not what's trendy.

  14. I LOVE it! Great choice! All these TV shows with the ridiculously lavish kitchens, yes they are lovely, but maybe not so affordable. But this? Yours? With the green counter tops? I think I found my dream kitchen.

  16. Wow,I never would have thought of that green, but it is absolutely beautiful and now I want your counters! :) I think I like it better than any marble you could have put in.The green really makes your kitchen stand out & makes me want to bake all day. :) I think it will be a great selling point of your house b/c I would buy it just for that great kitchen alone! I also love your organizational system...so neat!

  17. See, we opted for "bright moss green" countertops and I love them too! We then painted the walls "Apple White" which is just barely green. I love, love, love it! Our cupboards are white as well, and we get alot of compliments. Right now, the big thing in home interiors in Britain are HUGE printed velour wallpapers, and everything is red and black. Ack!

  18. Oooh I really like those! In our last kitchen (before we started renting), I painted our entire kitchen/dining room a lime-ish color. Not bright neon lime, but tasteful pretty lime that doesn't require sunglasses. It was one of my favorite things about that house. I want a green kitchen again someday. Do you think our landlord would notice if I painted over his botched and ugly "wallpaper"?
