Sewing Project 2

Here's the finished Olive Dress--for her tights I mixed some red and orange RIT die and they turned out quite charming, I think. I used some tomato red glass buttons down the back.

The compulsive sewing side of me has a tendency to line everything. I just don't like a flim flam piece of clothing, I suppose. When I began making this jacket for Olive, I noticed there was no intention of lining it per instructions. I restrained myself, followed the instructions and discovered that finishing the facing with a bit of bias tape was quite freeing. The corduroy is heavy enough that it can stand on its own. The pattern suggested making the bias out of the fabric, but the corduroy was too thick for the task, so I opted for pre-made in a contrasting color.

  8. Oh Katie! Will you have a sewing camp, we'll all come and pay and you can teach us some of your talent. I agree with Jordan! You really need to find an investor and open your own shop...

  13. Sara--I got the buttons in Savannah, GA at a little fabric shop we happened upon, but I've seen them other places.
Tasha--I've got my planning hat on! I'd love to have a sewing camp (that's my kind of camping!) I'm thinking March or April--beachside. It will be a weekend getaway with sunshine scattered in between projects.

  14. Oh, my, Katy! I'm grateful for this post. I'm nothing of a seamstress, but I'm so grateful to know the term 'wane' for corduroy. and i'm grateful you added the last photo close-up of the buttons. somehow in the pics above they looked like jewel-shape buttons. but those ladies make all the difference. Also, did you felt the olive yourself? Oh, my.
