Shoe Laces, Bubble Gum, and Training Wheels

Having so many kids so fast, I'm afraid we've neglected some major milestones as parents.  It was Ryan's mom who taught Divine how to tie her shoes a couple of years ago.  While my parents were here, my mom taught her to blow bubbles (which she has done almost without ceasing since they left!)  It's also rather embarrassing as a parent that we haven't even taught her how to ride a bike without training wheels.  I guess we think she'll take the initiative...after all, she is the oldest, 6 just a month shy of 7 (read: we think she is older than she really is because she has 4 little sisters.)  It just makes me wonder, what else have we neglected while we're busy just keeping everyone else alive and, for the most part, dressed?

  1. I'd take a sibling over private parent-driven shoelace tying lessons any day. she still learned her skill and she still has the memory of an attentive (extended) family.

  2. Wish I could be there to teach her to skip. Diedree (is that how her name is spelled?)taught me to skip and Knute taught me to hang upside down on the monkey bars with no hands. I love having that connection with them.

  4. well, one skill you haven't neglected to teach this gal is reading. all the primary adults notice how clearly and well divine enunciates her scripture words when she has her turn. she never seems to get tripped up by the big scary words, either. maybe she has a future career in radio or television :)

  5. Grandparents are supposed to teach the fun things, parents teach the boring stuff.

  7. It takes a village. You are blessed to have people who love your children and want to teach them and spend time with them. I think that's how God inteded it to be so children could be well rounded and parents could focus on the important stuff.

  8. It was nice when Pam was here, because she did teach Kylie all the "fun" stuff - somersaults, playing in the rain, etc., things I forgot about that I enjoyed as a child. I do all the boring stuff - numbers, letters, writing, etc.
