Sesame Streetspiration

Many of my early motherhood years are a blur. I blame it on the 18 months between child 1 and 2 and child 2 and 3. I know they watched Sesame Street because I bought Pearl an Elmo doll that she loved to pieces, literally. I'm not sure what happened as children 4, 5, and 6 came along. Somehow, the most famous giant bird and his trusty friend with the long trunk and even longer eyelashes were forgotten - until today. I asked Drummer if he had ever seen Sesame Street. His eyes grew big and an excited smile formed on his face as he asked, "Where is this street?! Can we go there?!"  So, of course, we remedied the situation. I pulled it up on the computer and we sat down together, watching Big Bird read books to the neighborhood children and David Beckham explain what the word "persistence" means, and Elmo stacking hats on his head, counting as he went. It was an instant hit with Drummer. And I remembered how much I love the celebrity cameos and guest appearances. 

Then Clover waltzed in the room and plopped herself down next to us. She was very pleased with herself that she could figure out the math problems before those furry little puppets could. I had forgotten how magical Sesame Street is, almost wishing we lived on a street where there is constant happiness and neighbors are more like family. Earlier in the day, Drummer was pestering me to watch a movie or play a game on daddy's ipad. I declined both requests in hopes he would do something with his imagination instead. He was relentless, however, until it was time to get in the car to pick up siblings from school. After we returned home and watched Sesame Street, Drummer wanted to make spaghetti for dinner because it was an example of being persistent in trying to eat it on a fork on Sesame Street.  He was fascinated to learn how bricks are made (anything to do with building, he's on board). After we ate our spaghetti (squash) dinner, I thought it would be fun to make our own Sesame Street-inspired puppets as a family: Sesame Streetspiration Puppets! I put a big stack of felt and cardboard pieces on the table and loved watching everyone get creative. I've heard that people look like their pets. I'm wondering if the same holds true for puppets. ;)  
 
So, the big news on the (Sesame) Street is that it's coming to HBO in January with all new episodes, fresh and updated! And I've noticed that the same people that were on when I was little haven't aged a bit! I tell ya, it's that Sesame Street magic. I need to get me some. ;)

  1. My favorite episodes are the Christmas episodes. Christmas on Sesame Street. So perfect. My hubby thought I was crazy when I found it for cheap one Christmas and bought it. But the memories it brings back are so wonderful!

  4. Sounds familiar--my first two watched Sesame Street. But we didn't get cable after we moved, so the third didn't see it much, and the fourth not at all. My oldest loved the brick-making bit, though, and used to dream of making everything, including a rocket ship, out of bricks!

    Now they all like the new Muppet music videos. Isn't YouTube handy?

  5. My favourite memory is sharing SS with my son and watching the same clips I did when I was little (specifically 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 tweeeeeellllve video game montage). I swear he learned to read early because of his SS exposure. As a parent I love the 5 minute pod casts - just long enough to hold a little one's attention span. He was recently told by boys at school that SS was for babies...well then call me a baby because I love it!!!!

  7. My favorite memory was the episode where Big Bird learns the alphabet and sings that crazy alphabet song where he thinks it was a word. My kids now love to see Elmo, and Abby.

  8. My youngest child is 26 so it's been a few years. I do remember my son liking Oscar the Grouch! I think it had to
    do with him and the garbage can!! My son also liked watching the garbage man pick up our garbage!!!

  12. I remember watching the Christmas special... I think Big Bird sat out and waited for Santa and got really cold-- icicles on his beak?! And I think he even says something about having chilblains!! That was my first exposure to that word :) Poor Big Bird!

  30. There was a cartoon meant to teach the concepts of "front" and "back" that featured a Frankenstein/robot named Junior. He learns "front and back" by holding his teddy bear, so I named my teddy "Junior," and I still have him four decades later :)

  32. Some of my earliest memories are of watching Sesame Street. We didn't have heat, so we'd sit as close as possible to the space heater while we watched in the winter. I still like to sit as close to the space heater as possible. ;)

I love so much about Sesame Street it's impossible to choose a single aspect or character or moment, but recently I was fetching something for my mom from her basement, and noticed a little Mr. Hooper from my old Playskool set standing solo on a shelf, and it brought me immense joy and a flood of happy Sesame Street childhood memories. I carried him home in my purse, and have decided to leave him there for moments I need a little sunny in my day.

  37. I was a PBS tv-head growing up. I watched Sesame Street twice a day, followed by Mr. Rogers, Electric Company, and Zoom. There are still some specific things I recall--Grover's "A-La Peanut butter sandwiches!"; the scene with Ernie as the waiter, the animation of Spanish words; I must have started watching it soon after it began airing.

  38. I loved Sesame Street as a kid (and my kids loved it too). One of my favorites was the pinball song (1,2,3,4,5...6,7,8,9,10...11,12).
    I still can sing along with that one.
    Then much much later, when my 16 year old was small, I absolutely loved when STOMP guest starred.
    Such happy learning connected with that show.

  44. My parents subscribed to a book club that delivered new Sesame Street books every week or month, (I can't remember). I loved getting a new book and asking my parents to sit and read it to me!

  45. I loved the animation between puppets skits especially the one that counted balls inside a magic pinball machine. "I,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, elven, twelve!".
    Oh and The Count... I guess I was more of a numbers person than I realized back then.

  47. I loved watching Sesame Street with my children. When my oldest graduated from high school, I found and bought the book Sesame Street Unpaved, a look behind the scenes. When her first marriage came undone and she and her 18 month old son move in with us for a few years, I watched Sesame Street with him. It had changed in those years, but it was still magic and every once in awhile they would show an old film clip from my daughter's era and I would sing along. We love Sesame Street.

  61. i loved "big bird goes to japan" as a kid. i also really, really remember how they handled mr. hooper's death. as a kid it made sense, and as an adult i appreciate the sensitivity that went into it.

  63. I love Sesame Street. I get sad when my kids don't want to watch it anymore! I loved the claymation Orange skit when I was a kid, but the best episode is a newer one with Big Bird going to live at the beach. It made my son giggle so hard he couldn't breathe and that is the very best!
